A Schnoodle's Guide to the Sweet Life

PSA: It's hot for pups too!

Its too many times that we hear about children and animals getting hurt or worse from being locked in a baking car.  Most people understand by now, even with the windows cracked, the inside of a parked car in the sun can quickly heat up to over 100 degrees F.  Not fun for pups, babies or grownups!  But even outside of the car, dogs are susceptible to heat-related injury.  A few tips for keeping your BFF cool for the summer:

  • Always make sure the water bowl is full. This seems like a given, but your buddy may be drinking a lot more water in this heat wave than usual.  Check regularly to make sure its full and clean.

  • Limit your walks in the heat and stay in the shade when possible.  You may be even opting out of your daily run in this heat.  Dogs need regular exercise, so a short walk at a slow to moderate pace will be fun for both of you.  If you do need to go on a longer walk, make sure to bring a container and extra water for them!
  • Be careful feeding your small dog ice.  Many small dogs have issues with the cold temperatures of ice.  It seems like a logical solution to throw some ice on the ground or in the water bowl, but their systems are not meant to handle such low temperatures.  Avoid to be on the safe side.
  • Pools: they're not just for people. If your dog likes to swim or lay in the water, let 'em at it!  If you don't have an adult sized pool, consider purchasing a kid sized pool for them to lounge in.  They will thank you!
